Gospel and readings from USCCB

Pope Benedict XVI had a famous saying: “The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness.”

Saints don’t necessarily die young or anything like that.

But they live exhilarating lives, approaching a level of intensity that can only exist, because it is sustained by God.

They are fully alive.

It is the difference between water and wine.

The difference between the spirit of the world, and the Spirit of God.

The difference between dirt, and gold.

A few days ago, we celebrated the feast of St Anthony.

A man who heard the words of the Gospel: go, sell what you have, give it to the poor, and follow me.

And he did it.

Gave his fortune to the poor.

Went to the desert.

Did spiritual battle with demons.

And God gave him victory.

////

The world offers comfort, security, wealth, and power.

All: lies.

It will leave you feeling empty and miserable.

/

God offers a perilous adventure.

No comfort, security, wealth, or power.

But you will be | alive.
