2019 Christmas Homily

Readings and Gospel at USCCB

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.

God became like us, in all things but sin.

He walked our walk, lived our life, cried our tears, felt our joy, and finally died our death.

////

For the reason God became man, listen to the words of St Athanasius:

“For this is why the Word became man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God.”

And he summarizes it in another place:

“The Son of God became man so that we might become God.”

God became man, so that we may become like Him.

In Catholic theology, the term is ‘divinization.’

Meaning that the life of Jesus, His Incarnation, was not just about freeing us from sin, but about making us like Him.

Drawing us in to the life of the Trinity.

This Christmas, we do not just celebrate the coming of God as a newborn into the life of humanity.

We celebrate God stopping at nothing, to completely overcome the sin of Eden, and make us fully united, for all eternity.

////

////
