Readings and Gospel at USCCB

“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”

God’s voice thunders from the Heavens, telling us to pay attention.

Wisdom is here, God’s beloved Son, and he is here to teach us.

And God commands, that we listen.

////

We heard in our first reading from the prophet Isaiah what kind of teacher Jesus will be:

“Here is my servant whom I uphold,

my chosen one with whom I am pleased,

upon whom I have put my spirit;

he shall bring forth justice to the nations,

not crying out, not shouting,

not making his voice heard in the street.

a bruised reed he shall not break,

and a smoldering wick he shall not quench,

until he establishes justice on the earth;

the coastlands will wait for his teaching.”

//

Jesus teaches gently, through parables and preaching.

He is not brash or destructive: he will spare the bruised reed, and will not quench the smoldering wick.

He will not yell at us, no screaming in our face.

He teaches gently, through healings and driving out demons.

////

With such a teacher, we must learn to listen intently.

Learn to sit quietly at His feet.

Pay attention as much to what he does, as to what he says.

////

Jesus is the center of reality.

Through Him, all things were made.

He never needs to prove himself, never needs to argue for why he should be listened to. And so He won’t.

His power is palpable, his authority, complete.

/

He is the beloved Son, in whom God is well pleased.

May we listen, and be attentive to Him.

God’s voice from the Heavens, telling us to pay attention.

Wisdom is here, God’s beloved Son, and He is here to teach us.

And God commands, that we listen.

////

“Miren a mi siervo, a quien sostengo,

a mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacencias.

En él he puesto mi espíritu

No gritará, no clamará, no hará oír su voz por las calles;

//

////

////

Escuchemos y estemos atentos a Él.
